The founder and owner of successful handcrafted market Perth Upmarket was recognised for her contribution to the community and outstanding entrepreneurial drive.

Ms Barsley said she was overwhelmed and delighted with the award.

“I am honoured that 40 Under 40 has recognised my personal achievement but also delighted that the creative talent of the Upmarket artists has been recognised,” Ms Barsley said.

Ms Barsley founded Perth Upmarket in 2008 after leaving a human resources job in Sydney.

“When I moved to Perth I wanted to start a business that would satisfy me creatively and financially, and build on my love of craft and design.

“Perth has an incredible community of talented artists and designers and I wanted to tap into this creativity and showcase them to the rest of the State,” Ms Barsley said.

In the three years since Ms Barsley launched Perth Upmarket it has grown exponentially from 55 designers and 3,000 customers to now four markets that attract more than 50,000 people, over 150 designers and making it WA’s premier handcrafted design market.

“I really believe the success of Upmarket is due to the talent of our retailers. They all produce incredibly original and high quality products that keep the customers coming back,” Ms Barsley said.

The success of Perth Upmarket is not only shared through the revenue earned by local designers, Ms Barsley has also contributed more than $13,000 to the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

“I have experienced first-hand the enormous difference the Starlight Foundation makes to children in need. I wanted to share my success of Upmarket and it is a great pleasure to be able to support the Starlight Foundation,” she said.

In addition to financial support Ms Barsley facilitates retailer donations of spare craft supplies for the Starlight room at Princess Margaret Hospital.

Ms Barsley said creating Perth Upmarket felt like she’d been given the opportunity to create something really unique.

“I am incredibly fortunate to be able to pursue a career that I love, support an organisation that is very dear to my heart and help hundreds of creative small businesses thrive in tricky economic times,” she said.
